Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi, Kenya
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel to relax before your safari experience begins the following day. Stay: Southern Sun Mayfair Nairobi.
Day 2: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
You’ll have an early breakfast before setting off around 6am for Wilson airport and your light aircraft flight to Amboseli. Amboseli National Park is one of the most popular parks in Kenya, home to around 1000 elephants and with a dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. On arrival at the Amboseli airstrip you’ll be met by a 4x4 vehicle and transfer to Tawi Lodge in the community-run Kilitome conservancy at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll stay in one of the lodge’s charming thatched cottages, which all have their own fireplace and freestanding bathtub with views of Kilimanjaro. After checking in, have lunch and enjoy some relaxation time before heading out on an exciting late afternoon game drive in the national park. Stay: Tawi Lodge. B, L, D.
Day 3: Full Day Amboseli National Park
A full day in Amboseli National Park awaits today, with morning and afternoon game drives or a full day game drive with picnic lunch. Covered by savannah and acacia trees, Amboseli’s open plains are the ideal place to search for wildebeest, buffalo, cheetah and lion, as well as the huge elephant families that the park is known for. Stay: Tawi Lodge. B, L, D.
Day 4: Amboseli to Samburu Game Reserve
After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your morning flight to Samburu via Nairobi’s Wilson airport. On landing in Samburu a 4x4 vehicle will transfer you to Larsens Camp – a deluxe tented camp with 20 tents in an unspoilt location on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. After lunch at the camp, embark on an afternoon game drive in this relatively small arid reserve, looking out for its rare 'dry country' wildlife. Stay: Larsens Camp. B, L, D.
Day 5: Samburu Game Reserve
Head out into the Samburu reserve on morning and afternoon game drives, where you'll have further chances to spot rare species that include the Samburu 'special five': the long-necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe. Stay: Larsens Camp. B, L, D.
Day 6: Samburu to Maasai Mara (Mara River)
This morning you will return to the airstrip for a direct light aircraft flight to the Musiara airstrip in the northern Maasai Mara. You’ll spot wildlife from the outset; lions can sometimes even be seen on the airstrip! From here it’s just a short transfer to Little Governors’ Camp – in the heart of the Maasai Mara and real-life 'Big Cat Diary' territory. Little Governors’ sits a small boat ride across the river from its two sister camps and has just 17 secluded tents tucked around a large watering hole that teems with birds and wildlife. So close to the action are you that, if you’re lucky, you’ll witness an elephant or giraffe wandering through camp, and hear the hippos at night. Enjoy lunch at the camp before heading out on an afternoon game drive in the Mara. Stay: Little Governors’ Camp. B, L, D.
Day 7: Maasai Mara (Mara River)
Today you will venture out on further game drives, either in the morning and afternoon or on a full day game drive to the Mara River crossing. The migration can usually be seen in the Maasai Mara from July to October. When the masses arrive, lines of animals stretch across the plains as far as the eye can see. Threats come from all angles. High above, vultures and eagles soar; in the long grasses, lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena lie in wait. But the most dramatic moments take place at the Mara River, which bisects the reserve and must be crossed to reach new grazing ground. This provides the ultimate test, with strong currents and predatory crocodiles lying in wait. Once the first animal has plunged into the waters, thousands follow. August is typically the best month to witness this extraordinary event, so during your time here we hope that you will experience all that the Great Migration has to offer. There’s also the option today of taking a hot-air balloon flight over the plains at sunrise – an unforgettable experience that’s highly recommended. Stay: Little Governors’ Camp. B, L, D.
Day 8: Maasai Mara (Mara River)
Another full day in the Mara provides the chance to witness more extraordinary wildlife events. Every day is different in the Mara, so keep your eyes peeled for new species and activity. Stay: Little Governors’ Camp. B, L, D.
Day 9: Maasai Mara (Bushtops conservancy)
After breakfast, check out of Little Governors’ and begin your journey towards the eastern side of the Mara. You will swap vehicles at the Talek gate and travel onwards on a game drive to Mara Bushtops. The exclusive Bushtops Collection has a ‘wild luxury’ ethos, and its award-winning Maasai Mara camp sits raised above the plains for spectacular views. The camp borders the reserve and is surrounded by a private conservancy, which allows for off-road and night game drives. The 12 lavish tents are amongst the biggest you’ll find in East Africa – each has an expansive wooden deck and an outdoor sunken bathtub, perfect for relaxing in after a day on safari. After lunch you’ll head out on an afternoon game drive, taking in what this side of the Mara has to offer. Stay: Mara Bushtops. B, L, D.
Day 10: Maasai Mara (Bushtops conservancy)
Spend another day in the eastern side of the Mara, with the option of morning and afternoon game drives or a full day game drive. Time permitting, you might also like to opt for a bush breakfast, sun downers, a night game drive or walking safari. Stay: Mara Bushtops. B, L, D.
Day 11: Maasai Mara (Bushtops conservancy) to Nairobi
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the camp before transferring to Siana airstrip for your light aircraft to Nairobi’s Wilson airport. Lunch will be at the well-known Carnivore Restaurant in the city. Afterwards you’ll return to the Nairobi Serena Hotel where you will have the use of a day room until 6pm, before transferring to the airport for your return flight home.
